News : A new species of Lepidoptera (Butterfly) has been discovered in IsraelDr. Zvi Klein and Ms. Valeria Seplyarsky of PPIS Diagnostics Department disclosed that an unknown species of Lepidoptera has been identified by taxonomists from Tel Aviv University and PPIS. The findings were ascertained by renowned Lepidoptera taxonomists from Germany, Canada and Lithuania. The unknown species of butterfly has been found in woods near kibbutz Eilon in western Galilee. The specimen looks distinctive by having some unique morphological characteristics which were thoroughly studied by the multinational team of experts. After a thorough investigation it has been established , that the specimen is a new species to the entomological science.
The new species is named Catocala amnonfreidbergi in honor of Dr. Amnon Freidberg, an eminent entomologist of Tel Aviv University which gained an international acclaim in taxonomy of insects.
